For Immediate Release
THE ZIEGFELD THEATER PRESENTS WEST SIDE STORY
The iconic American musical, West Side Story, brings the lessons of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet to a new generation.
June 5 - 27, 2015
OGDEN, UT-May 10, 2015-Continuing an incredibly successful season of plays, The Ziegfeld Theater is pleased to bring the seldom-produced, Leonard Bernstein classic West Side Story to Northern Utah.
From the first notes to the final breath,West Side Story is one of the most memorable musicals and greatest love stories of all time. A modern day Romeo and Juliet, the story begins by introducing us to rival neighborhood gangs in New York City, the American Jets and the Puerto Rican Sharks. Two young lovers, Tony and Maria, want nothing more than to to escape their world of hate together. But as honorary members of the race war they reside in, their dream can only end in a familiar tragedy. The result is a lesson for their community and for us all, that hate breeds hate and only wide acceptance and tolerance can break the cycle of violence.
West Side Story is directed by Morgan Parry, music directed by Rick Rea, and choreographed by Talese Hunt, an accomplished professional dancer and former Rockette whose movement and directions, while continuing in the tradition begun by the inimitable Jerome Robbins, add new life, beauty and excitement to the story.
West Side story is the third production of The Ziegfeld Theater’s fourth season, following audience and critically-acclaimed productions of Fiddler on the Roof and Les Misérables which played to near sell-out crowds. Under the executive leadership of Caleb and Morgan Parry and the artistic leadership of Rick Rea, the theater pursues a mission of “Professional Standard, Community Spirit” as it strives to bring quality entertainment to diverse audiences in Northern Utah.
Opening night is Friday, June 5 at 7:30 p.m., after which will be a special opening night gala. Regular performances are 7:30 p.m. every Friday and Saturday, with two 2:00 p.m. matinees on Saturdays June 20 and 27.
